Convert PDF pages to Adobe Illustrator files privately in your browser. No software, no uploads, no waiting.
From PDF upload to .ai file download in under a minute.
A quick primer on the .ai format — what's inside, where it comes from, and why a PDF can become one.
The .ai file is Adobe Illustrator's native format and one of the industry standards for vector graphics. From Illustrator CS (2003) onward, .ai files are built on the PDF specification — they're essentially PDF documents with Illustrator-specific creator and producer metadata, plus optional embedded private streams that Illustrator uses to preserve full editability. That's exactly why a clean PDF-to-AI conversion is possible at all: at the binary level, an Illustrator CS-or-later .ai file is a PDF. This tool reads each selected page with pdf-lib, writes new Adobe Illustrator creator and producer metadata, preserves the original page size as the new artboard, and saves with the .ai extension so Illustrator opens it natively.

Wherever Adobe Illustrator is the design tool of choice, converting client- or vendor-supplied PDFs to .ai is a near-daily task.
Convert client-supplied PDF mockups, logos and brand assets into editable .ai files for revisions, color updates and resizing.
Pre-press teams take print-ready PDFs into Illustrator to adjust bleeds, run color separations, and prepare ink trapping before press.
Branding studios receive PDF style guides and extract logo variants, icon sets and color palettes into individual .ai files for archive and use.
Packaging designers convert die-line PDFs to .ai to revise structural keylines, dieline marks and graphics layered on the package.
Magazine and newspaper designers move PDF article layouts into Illustrator for cover refinement, headline tuning and graphic embellishment.
Apparel designers convert tech-pack PDFs to .ai to revise flat sketches, label callouts and trim specifications between sample rounds.
Architectural firms convert PDF presentation boards to .ai for graphic refinement, layout adjustments and printed display preparation.
Map makers convert atlas PDF sheets to .ai for label tweaks, color palette updates and the addition of points of interest.
Motion designers convert storyboard PDF sheets to .ai to prepare frames for After Effects import, title-card design and credit design.
Design schools and bootcamps convert PDF reference designs to .ai so students can dissect, modify and learn from real industry artwork.
Religious publishers convert PDF service bulletins and liturgical artwork into .ai for typography refinement and graphic adjustment.
Heritage institutions convert PDF exhibition signage and label-maker PDFs to .ai for typographic refinement and final print preparation.
A complete reference for every control in the converter — what it does, what to pick, and how it affects the .ai output.
The prefix here becomes the start of every output filename. Single-page conversions become my-document-page1.ai; multi-page conversions become my-document-page1.ai, my-document-page2.ai, etc., and the ZIP archive itself becomes my-document-ai-files.zip. Special characters are stripped automatically.
The tool writes the chosen version string into the PDF's creator metadata. Illustrator uses this to display the file as a native .ai document. Match this to your installed version of Illustrator for the cleanest open experience. CS6 is the safest choice for very old Illustrator installs; 2024 for the newest Creative Cloud subscriptions.
ZIP archive bundles all selected pages into one downloadable .zip file — recommended for 3+ pages, cleaner for managing. Individual files triggers separate downloads one after the other — useful when you only want a few specific pages and don't want to unzip afterwards.
Drag and drop a PDF directly onto the dashed upload area, or click anywhere on it to open the system file picker. Only one PDF can be loaded at a time. Use the Change File button (or Clear & Reset) to load a different document. The file is read entirely locally — no upload happens.
Loading uses PDF.js to render every page as a thumbnail and pdf-lib to prepare the document for conversion. Both run entirely in the browser. Larger PDFs (50+ pages) may take a few seconds to fully render — thumbnails appear progressively as each page completes.
Select All ticks every page. Deselect All clears the selection completely. Invert flips which pages are selected — useful when you want most pages except a few. You can also click individual page thumbnails to toggle them one at a time.
Runs the conversion for every selected page. For one page, a single .ai file is downloaded. For multiple pages, the output is delivered according to the Multi-Page Download setting (ZIP or individual). Progress appears in an overlay during conversion.
A few small adjustments will make your converted .ai files cleaner, more editable and easier to manage in Illustrator.
PDFs exported from Illustrator, InDesign, Figma or Sketch produce the most editable .ai files. Scanned PDFs or rasterized ones open as embedded images, not editable paths.
Illustrator opens any version, but tagging your file correctly means it shows the right format icon and doesn't trigger compatibility warnings on save.
The output filename prefix becomes part of every .ai filename. Use a descriptive prefix like "brand-logos" or "Q4-icons" so your downloads are easy to find later.
For 100+ page PDFs, browser memory can become the bottleneck. Select smaller batches (10-20 pages at a time) and run multiple conversions instead of one giant ZIP.
If you want every page converted, click Select All instead of clicking each thumbnail. Saves time and reduces the chance of skipping pages.
Want all pages except the cover and table of contents? Click those two, then click Invert. Much faster than clicking every other page individually.
Encrypted or password-protected PDFs can't be parsed by pdf-lib. Open the PDF in your reader, save a copy without encryption, then convert that.
If you're not sure how a PDF will convert, do a single-page test first. This shows you whether vector content is preserved or rasterized.
Three separate downloads is fine; thirty isn't. Switch to ZIP mode any time you're converting more than a couple of pages — your browser will thank you.
The conversion is one-way. Keep your original PDF as a backup — you can always re-convert with different settings if you need a different version tag or selection.
Once the .ai is open in Illustrator, expand the Layers panel and ungroup as needed to reach editable paths. Some content may be wrapped in nested clipping groups.
The Selected count and AI Files Out values update instantly as you click pages. Use them as a sanity check before clicking Convert — especially on large documents.
Most online PDF-to-AI converters upload your file to a server. This one runs entirely in your browser — your PDF never leaves your device.
Every step of the conversion — parsing your PDF, rendering thumbnails, copying pages, writing Illustrator metadata, packaging into a ZIP — runs in your browser's own JavaScript engine. No PDF content, no thumbnails, no .ai files and no metadata are ever transmitted over the network.
