What Is an Adobe Illustrator File?

A quick primer on the .ai format — what's inside, where it comes from, and why a PDF can become one.

📅
1987
Year Adobe Illustrator 1.0 first shipped — the first major commercial vector drawing application.
🔄
CS
Since Illustrator CS (2003), .ai files have been built on the PDF specification — essentially PDF + Illustrator metadata.
🎨
Vector
Native format is vector — paths, shapes and text remain mathematically described and infinitely scalable.
📦
.ai
Standard file extension. Other vector tools (Inkscape, Affinity Designer, Sketch) can also open recent .ai files.
🖼️
Artboard
The fixed-size workspace in an .ai file. The original PDF page dimensions become the new artboard size.
🏢
Adobe
Owned and maintained by Adobe Inc.; .ai is part of the Creative Cloud ecosystem alongside Photoshop and InDesign.

The .ai file is Adobe Illustrator's native format and one of the industry standards for vector graphics. From Illustrator CS (2003) onward, .ai files are built on the PDF specification — they're essentially PDF documents with Illustrator-specific creator and producer metadata, plus optional embedded private streams that Illustrator uses to preserve full editability. That's exactly why a clean PDF-to-AI conversion is possible at all: at the binary level, an Illustrator CS-or-later .ai file is a PDF. This tool reads each selected page with pdf-lib, writes new Adobe Illustrator creator and producer metadata, preserves the original page size as the new artboard, and saves with the .ai extension so Illustrator opens it natively.

Every Setting Explained

A complete reference for every control in the converter — what it does, what to pick, and how it affects the .ai output.

📋Output Filename

The base name for the output .ai files

The prefix here becomes the start of every output filename. Single-page conversions become my-document-page1.ai; multi-page conversions become my-document-page1.ai, my-document-page2.ai, etc., and the ZIP archive itself becomes my-document-ai-files.zip. Special characters are stripped automatically.

🎨Illustrator Version Tag

Choose which version of Illustrator to target

The tool writes the chosen version string into the PDF's creator metadata. Illustrator uses this to display the file as a native .ai document. Match this to your installed version of Illustrator for the cleanest open experience. CS6 is the safest choice for very old Illustrator installs; 2024 for the newest Creative Cloud subscriptions.

📦Multi-Page Download

ZIP archive or individual files

ZIP archive bundles all selected pages into one downloadable .zip file — recommended for 3+ pages, cleaner for managing. Individual files triggers separate downloads one after the other — useful when you only want a few specific pages and don't want to unzip afterwards.

📂Upload Zone

Adding a PDF

Drag and drop a PDF directly onto the dashed upload area, or click anywhere on it to open the system file picker. Only one PDF can be loaded at a time. Use the Change File button (or Clear & Reset) to load a different document. The file is read entirely locally — no upload happens.

🔍Load PDF Button

Parse pages and show thumbnails

Loading uses PDF.js to render every page as a thumbnail and pdf-lib to prepare the document for conversion. Both run entirely in the browser. Larger PDFs (50+ pages) may take a few seconds to fully render — thumbnails appear progressively as each page completes.

☑️Selection Controls

Select All / Deselect All / Invert

Select All ticks every page. Deselect All clears the selection completely. Invert flips which pages are selected — useful when you want most pages except a few. You can also click individual page thumbnails to toggle them one at a time.

🎨Convert Button

Generate the .ai files

Runs the conversion for every selected page. For one page, a single .ai file is downloaded. For multiple pages, the output is delivered according to the Multi-Page Download setting (ZIP or individual). Progress appears in an overlay during conversion.

Best Practices for
Better PDF-to-AI Output

A few small adjustments will make your converted .ai files cleaner, more editable and easier to manage in Illustrator.

01

Use vector-source PDFs whenever possible

PDFs exported from Illustrator, InDesign, Figma or Sketch produce the most editable .ai files. Scanned PDFs or rasterized ones open as embedded images, not editable paths.

02

Match the version tag to your Illustrator

Illustrator opens any version, but tagging your file correctly means it shows the right format icon and doesn't trigger compatibility warnings on save.

03

Name files clearly before converting

The output filename prefix becomes part of every .ai filename. Use a descriptive prefix like "brand-logos" or "Q4-icons" so your downloads are easy to find later.

04

Convert page-by-page for very large files

For 100+ page PDFs, browser memory can become the bottleneck. Select smaller batches (10-20 pages at a time) and run multiple conversions instead of one giant ZIP.

05

Use Select All for entire documents

If you want every page converted, click Select All instead of clicking each thumbnail. Saves time and reduces the chance of skipping pages.

06

Use Invert for "everything except"

Want all pages except the cover and table of contents? Click those two, then click Invert. Much faster than clicking every other page individually.

07

Remove DRM before converting

Encrypted or password-protected PDFs can't be parsed by pdf-lib. Open the PDF in your reader, save a copy without encryption, then convert that.

08

Test one page first for unfamiliar PDFs

If you're not sure how a PDF will convert, do a single-page test first. This shows you whether vector content is preserved or rasterized.

09

Use ZIP for 3+ files

Three separate downloads is fine; thirty isn't. Switch to ZIP mode any time you're converting more than a couple of pages — your browser will thank you.

10

Keep the original PDF

The conversion is one-way. Keep your original PDF as a backup — you can always re-convert with different settings if you need a different version tag or selection.

11

Expand layers in Illustrator after opening

Once the .ai is open in Illustrator, expand the Layers panel and ungroup as needed to reach editable paths. Some content may be wrapped in nested clipping groups.

12

Watch the live stats while selecting

The Selected count and AI Files Out values update instantly as you click pages. Use them as a sanity check before clicking Convert — especially on large documents.

Why This Tool Is Different
(and Safer)

Most online PDF-to-AI converters upload your file to a server. This one runs entirely in your browser — your PDF never leaves your device.

🔒 100% Client-Side Conversion

Every step of the conversion — parsing your PDF, rendering thumbnails, copying pages, writing Illustrator metadata, packaging into a ZIP — runs in your browser's own JavaScript engine. No PDF content, no thumbnails, no .ai files and no metadata are ever transmitted over the network.

No File UploadsYour PDF stays on your device. The browser's Network tab will confirm: zero outbound requests with file data.
No Account RequiredNo sign-up, no email, no tracking cookies. Open the page, drop a file, get .ai files.
No File RetentionBecause the server never sees the files, there's literally nothing for us to store, leak or sell.
Works OfflineOnce the page is loaded, switch off Wi-Fi and the converter still runs.
Open-Source EnginesBuilt on pdf-lib, PDF.js and JSZip — all MIT-licensed and auditable on GitHub.
Brand-SafeBecause your brand assets never reach a server, the tool is safe to use for unreleased, confidential or pre-launch designs.

PDF to AI — Common Questions

Everything you need to know about converting PDF files to Adobe Illustrator (.ai) format — covering compatibility, editability, privacy and output options.

What is an Adobe Illustrator .ai file?
An .ai file is Adobe Illustrator's native format. From CS version onward, AI files are built on the PDF specification — they are essentially PDF files with Illustrator-specific creator metadata and optional embedded Illustrator data.
Can I edit the converted file in Illustrator?
Yes. When you open the converted .ai file in Illustrator, vector content such as paths, text, and shapes from the original PDF can be selected and edited. Rasterized or scanned content appears as embedded images.
Is my PDF file uploaded to a server?
No. Everything runs in your browser using pdf-lib and PDF.js. Your PDF is never sent to any server — complete privacy is guaranteed.
Which Illustrator versions can open the output?
Adobe Illustrator CS2 and all later versions (CS3–CS6, CC 2014–2024) can open PDF-based .ai files. Use the version tag selector to match your installed version for best compatibility.
Why is the output a ZIP file?
When converting multiple pages, each page becomes a separate .ai file. To deliver them all in one download, they are bundled in a ZIP archive using JSZip. You can also switch to "Individual files" mode in settings.
Can I convert a password-protected PDF?
No. Encrypted PDFs cannot be read without the password. Remove the password protection from your PDF first using a PDF editor, then upload for conversion.
Will the .ai file open in Inkscape?
Modern versions of Inkscape can open recent Illustrator files (since CS), because they're PDF-based at heart. Older versions may struggle. Inkscape natively prefers SVG, so for full Inkscape editing consider exporting as SVG instead.
Does it work with multi-artboard PDFs?
Each PDF page becomes its own single-artboard .ai file. Multi-artboard handling in a single .ai file isn't reconstructed from a multi-page PDF — but each page's content lands in its own document with the correct page dimensions.
Are fonts preserved?
Yes, if the original PDF embeds the font (which is most of them). Fonts that were subsetted or converted to outlines remain as-is. Anything missing falls back to system fonts when Illustrator opens the file.
Will images embedded in the PDF survive?
Yes. Any raster images embedded in the source PDF are preserved in the .ai file as linked or embedded images, depending on the source. They'll appear in Illustrator's Links panel.
What about transparency, gradients and effects?
All standard PDF visual features — transparency, gradients, gradient meshes, layered transparency — are preserved through the conversion because we're essentially copying the page intact.
Does this tool create a "real" .ai file?
Yes — by Adobe's own format spec, modern .ai files are PDF documents with specific creator/producer metadata. Setting that metadata and using a .ai extension produces a file Illustrator recognizes natively.
What's the file size of the output?
Comparable to the original PDF page — usually within a few KB. We're not adding overhead, just changing metadata and writing each selected page as a standalone document.
Is there a watermark on the output?
No watermark, no branding stamp, no signup-nag overlay. The downloaded .ai files contain only your content with Illustrator-friendly metadata.
Can I batch-convert many PDFs?
The tool processes one PDF at a time, but you can convert as many separate PDFs as you like, back-to-back. There's no quota, no rate limit, and no waiting.
Does this work on mobile?
Yes — the interface is fully responsive. For very large PDFs, desktop browsers handle memory better, but mobile works fine for typical brand-asset or single-page conversions.
Why is the artboard size what it is?
The Illustrator artboard size matches the original PDF page size exactly. A4 stays A4; Letter stays Letter; custom sizes stay custom. No scaling or cropping is applied.
Can I open the .ai file in Affinity Designer?
Yes. Affinity Designer opens PDF-based .ai files just like Illustrator does, with mostly preserved editability. Some Illustrator-specific features (live appearance effects) may flatten.
What if Illustrator says "Cannot open"?
Usually this means the source PDF is encrypted or damaged. Re-save the source PDF without encryption, then try again. Also confirm your Illustrator version is CS2 or later.
Is there a daily limit?
No. Convert as many PDFs to .ai as you want, as often as you want. There's no quota, no rate limit, and no premium tier.

PDF & Illustrator Glossary

Key terms used in PDF-to-AI conversion and on this page, explained simply.

.AI File
Adobe Illustrator's native document format. From CS onward, .ai files are built on the PDF specification with Illustrator-specific creator metadata.
Adobe Illustrator
Adobe's professional vector drawing application, first released in 1987 and now part of Creative Cloud. The standard tool for logo, icon and illustration design.
Vector
A type of graphic defined mathematically by points, lines and curves — infinitely scalable without loss of quality. The opposite of raster (pixel-based).
Raster
A pixel-based image format (JPG, PNG). When a raster image is embedded in a PDF, it stays raster after the .ai conversion.
Artboard
The fixed-size workspace in an Illustrator document. Each PDF page becomes a single artboard of identical dimensions in its own .ai file.
Creator Metadata
A field in a PDF file's header that identifies the originating application. Setting it to "Adobe Illustrator [version]" makes the file a valid .ai.
Producer Metadata
A separate metadata field identifying the library or engine that wrote the file. For .ai compatibility, this is set to an Adobe PDF Library string.
PDF
Portable Document Format — Adobe's open ISO-standard fixed-layout document format. The structural basis of modern .ai files.
CS
Creative Suite — the family of Adobe applications shipped from 2003 to 2013. The first version of Illustrator (CS) where .ai files became PDF-based.
CC
Creative Cloud — Adobe's subscription model that replaced Creative Suite in 2013. Includes Illustrator 2014 through Illustrator 2024.
SVG
Scalable Vector Graphics — an open W3C standard for vector graphics. Used widely on the web. Different from .ai but easily exported from Illustrator.
EPS
Encapsulated PostScript — a legacy print-friendly vector format. Now largely superseded by PDF and AI but still found in archival workflows.
PostScript
Adobe's page description language from the 1980s. The technological ancestor of PDF and, by extension, the modern .ai format.
Path
A vector shape defined by anchor points and curve segments. The editable building block of every Illustrator illustration.
pdf-lib
An open-source JavaScript library used to read, edit and write PDF files in the browser. The engine that writes the new .ai files.
PDF.js
Mozilla's open-source JavaScript library used to render PDF pages to canvas. Generates the page thumbnails you see in the selector.
JSZip
An open-source JavaScript library used to build ZIP archives in the browser. Used to bundle multiple .ai files into a single download.
Client-Side
All file processing happens on your device (in the browser) rather than on a remote server — faster, more private, and works offline.
