Important: PDF and EPUB solve different problems. A PDF fixes content to pages; a reflowable EPUB restructures text for flexible screens. Complex columns, tables, formulas, forms and exact typography may not translate perfectly. For scanned PDFs without a text layer, choose Visual page-preserving EPUB or run OCR before using reflowable mode.

What Is EPUB and Why Convert PDF to eBook Format?

EPUB is a digital-publication format designed for eBooks and structured documents, while PDF is primarily a fixed-page document format.

An EPUB file is a packaged digital publication that can contain XHTML, CSS, images, metadata and navigation. The current W3C EPUB 3.3 specification defines EPUB as a distribution and interchange format for digital publications and documents. That structure makes EPUB well suited to e-readers and reading applications because content can be organized into chapters and, in a reflowable book, adapt to the reader's screen and settings.

A PDF normally represents a page exactly: text and graphics are positioned at coordinates inside a fixed page size. That is useful for contracts, forms, print-ready files, technical diagrams, invoices and publications where page geometry matters. It is less comfortable when a reader wants to enlarge text on a small screen because the page itself does not automatically recompose like a reflowable eBook.

Why PDF to EPUB conversion is more than changing a file extension

Renaming .pdf to .epub does not create an eBook. EPUB has its own container and publication structure. A legitimate EPUB package includes a media-type declaration, a container file that identifies the package document, publication metadata, a manifest of resources, a spine that establishes reading order, and one or more content documents. This converter builds those pieces in the browser and then compresses them into an EPUB container.

The challenge is the content transformation. A PDF might store a paragraph as many independent text fragments placed at page coordinates, and the visible reading order can be different from the internal object order. A PDF can also contain only scanned page images with no actual text to extract. For that reason, this page offers two different conversion strategies instead of pretending that every PDF can become a perfectly structured reflowable book automatically.

Reflowable EPUB vs Visual Page-Preserving EPUB

The best PDF to EPUB setting depends on whether you value flexible reading or the exact look of the original pages.

PDF ContentRecommended ModeWhat You GainMain Limitation
Novel, article, report or text-heavy PDFReflowable textAdjustable text and smaller EPUBOriginal page layout changes
Scanned book without OCRVisual pagesReadable facsimile of each scanText is not selectable/reflowable
Magazine, brochure or multi-column layoutVisual pagesDesign remains recognizableLarger file and zooming may be needed
Academic paper with equations and complex tablesVisual or carefully reviewed reflowChoose fidelity or flexible textAutomated structure can be imperfect
Accessible tagged PDF with clean text orderReflowable textBetter chance of logical extractionSemantic tags are not fully reconstructed by this simple converter
Encrypted or permission-restricted PDFAuthorized unlocked sourceAvoids access failuresThe browser may be unable to open the document

Choose reflowable text when reading comfort matters

Reflowable EPUB is the better choice for prose, reports, study notes and documents where the words matter more than their original page coordinates. E-readers can typically display the resulting XHTML using the user's preferred font size and screen orientation. The conversion extracts text using Mozilla PDF.js, a web standards-based PDF parsing and rendering project, then writes that text into EPUB content documents.

Choose visual pages when appearance matters

Visual mode renders every source page onto a browser canvas, converts the rendering to an image, and places that image into an EPUB reading-order page. It does not perform OCR. This method is appropriate when a scan, illustrated workbook, catalog, slide deck, comic-like document or complicated layout would be damaged by text extraction. The trade-off is that the page behaves like a picture: text cannot reflow and accessibility is limited compared with a properly authored text EPUB.

Which PDFs Convert Well to EPUB?

A clean selectable-text PDF can produce a useful reflowable eBook, while layout-heavy, scanned or protected documents may need a different workflow.

✅
Selectable Text PDFs
Books, reports and documents with a real text layer are the strongest candidates for reflowable PDF to EPUB conversion.
📷
Scanned PDFs
Use visual mode if pages are photographs or scans. For a true text eBook, run OCR first so words exist as machine-readable text.
📰
Columns and Magazines
Reading order can be ambiguous when text is placed in columns, sidebars and floating boxes. Visual mode often preserves the intended experience better.
📊
Tables and Charts
Plain text extraction may flatten table structure or separate labels from values. Review the output carefully when data relationships matter.
∑
Equations and Technical Layout
Mathematical notation and precisely positioned symbols are difficult to reconstruct as semantic eBook markup automatically. Visual mode can retain appearance.
🔐
Protected PDFs
Password-protected, encrypted or rights-restricted files may not open. Use only content you are authorized to convert and an unlocked source when required.

How to Get Better PDF to EPUB Conversion Results

Good output begins by understanding the source PDF, then choosing the mode that matches its structure.

01

Test whether text is selectable

If you can highlight and copy normal sentences from the PDF, reflowable mode has a meaningful text layer to work with. If not, consider OCR or visual mode.

02

Use visual mode for complicated pages

Brochures, magazines, two-column research papers, comics and heavily designed manuals often lose relationships when treated as a simple stream of text.

03

Set real metadata

Add the correct book title, author and language before conversion. This helps compatible reading apps identify and catalog the resulting EPUB.

04

Keep chapter groups manageable

Grouping several source pages into a chapter reduces an excessively long navigation list. One-page chapters can be useful for short PDFs or precise page-level navigation.

05

Inspect punctuation and reading order

PDF text fragments may not be stored in human reading order. Check columns, headings, footnotes, lists and hyphenated words after conversion.

06

Use smaller visual quality on mobile

Rendering every page into a high-resolution image can consume a large amount of browser memory. Balanced or smaller quality is safer for long documents.

07

Keep the original PDF

EPUB output is a reading copy. Preserve the original PDF whenever you need exact page numbers, print fidelity, signatures, forms, annotations or records.

08

Validate before publishing commercially

A quick browser conversion is useful for personal reading and drafts, but professional distribution should include editorial review, accessibility work and EPUB validation.

Why a PDF to EPUB Conversion May Look Different

Most conversion problems come from the difference between fixed PDF page geometry and structured eBook content.

The EPUB contains very little text

The PDF may be a scan or may store visible lettering as outlines/images instead of real text. This converter does not claim to provide OCR. Use visual mode to preserve the pages as images, or process the PDF with an OCR workflow first and then return for a reflowable conversion.

Columns are mixed together

Multi-column PDFs can expose text fragments in an order that differs from the way a human reads the page. Automatic extraction can therefore join the bottom of one column with the top of another or insert sidebars at unexpected positions. For personal reading, visual mode may be the safer choice. For publishing, reconstruct the source from an editable document and author the EPUB deliberately.

Tables are flattened

A PDF table is often a set of text fragments placed at coordinates, not a semantic HTML-style table. Reflowable extraction may preserve the words but lose row and column relationships. If the table carries important financial, scientific or legal meaning, retain the PDF or use visual mode for that material.

Fonts and styling do not match

The reflowable mode intentionally uses simple EPUB CSS rather than attempting to copy every PDF font and absolute position. This keeps the eBook lightweight and adaptable. If exact type design matters, visual mode is closer to the source appearance, while a professionally authored EPUB can embed licensed fonts and carefully designed styles.

The browser becomes slow on a long PDF

All work happens on the device, so a 300-page image-heavy PDF can consume substantial memory—especially in visual mode, where every page must be rendered and compressed. Close unused tabs, choose a lower visual quality, or convert a smaller PDF. You can use the Split PDF tool first if the document is easier to handle in parts.

The PDF is password protected

Use an authorized unlocked copy. This tool is not designed to bypass passwords, encryption or digital rights controls. If the document belongs to you, remove restrictions using the original authoring workflow or obtain an unprotected copy from the rights holder.

Private PDF to EPUB Conversion in Your Browser

Books, drafts, reports and personal documents can contain confidential information, so this conversion path is designed around local browser processing.

Your PDF Does Not Need a Conversion Upload

The selected file is opened in browser memory with PDF.js. Reflowable mode extracts available text locally; visual mode renders pages to a local canvas. JSZip then packages the generated publication files into an EPUB Blob that your browser downloads. No ProPDFMaker conversion endpoint is required for that workflow.

🔒 Local file readingThe PDF is read from the file object selected in your browser.
🧠 Device memoryLong PDFs and high-resolution visual mode depend on available RAM and processing power.
🗑️ Session basedReloading or closing the page clears the in-memory file reference used by the converter.
✅ Rights still matterLocal processing does not grant permission to reproduce copyrighted or restricted material.

PDF to EPUB Converter: Detailed eBook Conversion Guide

A deeper explanation of text extraction, scanning, images, navigation, metadata, accessibility, e-readers and professional publishing workflows.

How the browser extracts text from a PDF

This tool uses the PDF.js display API to load the selected document and retrieve text content from pages. PDF.js exposes page text items with strings, direction and positioning information. The converter uses those items to reconstruct readable lines and paragraphs. That approach can work well for ordinary single-column text, but PDF is a presentation format: the text objects were not necessarily authored as semantic paragraphs, headings or lists.

To reduce obvious line-break problems, the smart-paragraph option joins neighboring lines when they appear to belong to the same paragraph. The “preserve more line breaks” option is more conservative and creates more separate blocks. Neither method can reliably infer every heading, table, quotation or footnote from arbitrary PDF geometry. If you need publication-quality structure, use the output as a starting point and edit the EPUB in an appropriate authoring workflow.

What happens to images in reflowable mode?

The current reflowable mode focuses on text and an optional generated cover. It does not attempt to reconstruct every image at its original position inside the text flow because automatically mapping PDF drawing operations to semantic eBook figures can create confusing output. If illustrations are central to the document, visual mode is more faithful because the entire page is rendered as one image.

Scanned PDF to EPUB without OCR

A scanned PDF often consists of page images. Humans can read the photographed letters, but text extraction sees little or nothing because there are no underlying character objects. Visual mode converts these pages into an image-based EPUB so they can be opened in compatible reading software. It is not the same as OCR and it does not make the words searchable. For a searchable reflowable book, perform OCR first, correct recognition errors, then convert the OCR-enhanced PDF.

Cover image generation

If “Use first PDF page as cover” is selected, the converter renders page one to a JPEG and adds that image to the EPUB manifest with the cover-image property. It also creates a cover XHTML document in the reading order. This is convenient when the PDF already has a title page or designed front cover. If page one is merely a blank page, copyright notice or internal form, disable the generated cover and add a proper cover later in an EPUB editor.

EPUB metadata and language

An EPUB package requires an identifier, title and language. The converter generates a unique publication identifier for each output and uses the title and language selected above. Author is optional in the standard but useful for library organization, so it is included when entered. The modification timestamp is recorded in UTC. For serious publishing, metadata may also include publisher, subjects, accessibility properties, contributor roles, identifiers such as ISBN and richer descriptive data.

Navigation and chapter grouping

EPUB navigation is not the same as PDF page thumbnails. This converter builds a simple table of contents from generated chapter groups. With five-page grouping, for example, pages 1–5 become Chapter 1, pages 6–10 become Chapter 2, and so on. This is a neutral automatic structure rather than a claim that the original document's real chapter boundaries occur every five pages. For a polished book, replace those generic labels with actual chapter titles.

Accessibility considerations

A reflowable EPUB can be much more adaptable than an image-only publication, but automatic text extraction does not automatically create an accessible eBook. High-quality accessible EPUB production involves meaningful heading hierarchy, navigation, image alternatives, reading order, language information and other semantics. Visual page mode is especially limited for screen readers because each page is essentially an image. Use a dedicated accessibility workflow when the eBook must meet publishing or organizational accessibility requirements.

Can an EPUB be converted back to the exact PDF?

Not reliably. Reflowable EPUB intentionally allows pagination to change based on screen size and reader settings, so there is no single fixed page layout to reconstruct. A visual EPUB retains page images that resemble the source, but the original PDF vectors, fonts, forms, annotations and internal structure are not restored simply by converting those images back.

Will PDF to EPUB reduce file size?

Reflowable text EPUBs can be much smaller than scanned or image-heavy PDFs because plain XHTML and CSS compress efficiently. Visual EPUBs can instead be similar in size or larger depending on page count, rendering resolution and JPEG quality. The “smaller file” option renders at a lower scale and stronger compression, while “sharper pages” uses more pixels and higher JPEG quality.

Best workflow for authors and publishers

  1. Prefer the original editable manuscript or layout source when it exists.
  2. Export or author EPUB directly from the source when you need professional semantics and accessibility.
  3. Use PDF-to-EPUB conversion when PDF is the only practical source or when you need a personal reading copy.
  4. Choose reflowable mode for prose and visual mode for fixed-layout material.
  5. Check navigation, paragraphs, punctuation, images and page order in at least one EPUB reader.
  6. Validate and edit the publication before commercial distribution.

EPUB standards and technical references

For technical details, the W3C EPUB 3.3 Recommendation describes the publication format, package document, Open Container Format and EPUB content documents. The converter's PDF parsing is based on Mozilla's PDF.js project. These references are useful when you need to understand why an EPUB is a structured package rather than a simple document extension.

Prepare the PDF Before or After eBook Conversion

Clean up page ranges, file size or document order when that makes the source easier to convert and review.

PDF to EPUB Converter — Frequently Asked Questions

Answers about reflowable eBooks, scanned PDFs, page fidelity, text extraction, metadata, e-readers, privacy and conversion limits.

Can I convert PDF to EPUB online for free?
Yes. This page can generate an EPUB from a PDF in your browser without a signup or paid tier.
Does my PDF upload to ProPDFMaker?
The conversion workflow is local. PDF.js reads the selected file in browser memory and JSZip creates the EPUB package on the device.
What is the best mode for a normal book PDF?
If the PDF contains selectable text in a simple reading order, choose reflowable text EPUB. It is generally more comfortable on small screens.
Can I convert a scanned PDF to EPUB?
Yes in visual mode, where pages are rendered as images. For searchable and reflowable text, run OCR first.
Does this converter perform OCR?
No. It does not claim to recognize text from scanned images. Reflowable mode depends on the PDF's existing text layer.
Will the EPUB look exactly like the PDF?
Reflowable mode will not, because it intentionally restructures text. Visual mode is much closer because each PDF page is rendered as an image.
Can I change the EPUB title and author?
Yes. Set title, author and language before conversion and the values are written into the EPUB package metadata.
Can I use the first PDF page as an EPUB cover?
Yes. The tool can render page one as a JPEG cover and register it in the generated EPUB.
What happens to PDF page numbers?
Reflowable eBooks do not preserve fixed pagination in the same way because text can repaginate. Visual mode keeps one rendered image per source page.
What happens to tables?
Text extraction may flatten table structure. Use visual mode when preserving row and column relationships is more important than text reflow.
What happens to images and diagrams?
Reflowable mode focuses on extracted text and an optional cover. Visual mode retains all visible page graphics as part of each rendered page image.
Does PDF to EPUB preserve hyperlinks?
This lightweight converter does not reconstruct every PDF annotation or link into semantic EPUB hyperlinks. Add critical links in an EPUB editor if needed.
Can I convert a password-protected PDF?
Protected files may fail to open. Use an authorized unlocked source; the converter is not designed to bypass passwords or rights controls.
Why is the visual EPUB large?
Each PDF page becomes a JPEG image. More pages, higher resolution and higher image quality all increase output size.
Will this EPUB work on every e-reader?
It creates a standard EPUB 3-style package, but individual reading apps vary in supported features and file-size limits. Test important books in your target reader.
Can I convert PDF to EPUB on iPhone or Android?
The interface is mobile responsive and modern browsers can process PDFs, but large documents—especially visual mode—may exceed mobile memory limits.
Should I delete the original PDF after conversion?
No. Keep the PDF when you may need fixed page numbers, print fidelity, annotations, forms, signatures or an authoritative source copy.
Can I publish the converted EPUB commercially?
Only if you have the necessary rights. Also review, edit, validate and accessibility-check the EPUB before professional distribution.
Why are some paragraphs out of order?
PDF stores page content by positioned objects, and the internal text order can differ from visual reading order, especially with columns and sidebars.
Is EPUB better than PDF?
For flexible long-form reading, EPUB can be better. For exact pages, forms, print and records, PDF is often the stronger format. The formats serve different purposes.
